Welcome to Subaltern Forum

Subaltern Forum's mission is to speak out from the margin to empower, develop and mainstream the subaltern* [read what is subaltern].

Subaltern Forum will contribute to the advancement of women and minorities' rights in our community by initiating subaltern discourse at the center and the margin, carrying out policy analysis to help advocate for a pro-subaltern state, launching awareness campaigns, capacity building programs and promoting what is saleable or markatable in the subaltern.

What is Subaltern?

[*Subaltern here means the excluded and oft-ignored groups, community and people in the periphery or margin who are away from the centre's facilities and privileges. In general, they are socially, economically and politically underprivileged and marginalized. But at the same time they also possess immense potential, which are still unexplored and untapped, in terms of literature, culture, indigenous knowledge etc. The specific subaltern group in Nepal's context means the men and women in the remote Mid and Far Western Nepal, Dalits, ethnic minorities, indigenous groups, conflict victims, and victims of other stigmas, superstitions and circumstances. Of late, Subaltern has also been used to refer certain bulk of non-Western literature.]
